Ugh! I didn't realize how much work I was getting myself into here! In between working my two jobs, taking classes, and setting up life as normal (ie internet, water, electricity...) trying to get my living space in order has been ridiculous!
But me and my roommates are still plugging along at it, and the ETA for it being finished is Friday since we want to have a party this Saturday in our new apartment, and I wouldn't say no if it spread out onto the roof.

But here's a few photos of the before and semi-after as you can see I'm only half finished refinishing the floor, so we'll just say that it's the before and middle :).
Who knew a girl like me would be frequenting Home Depot so often? There's been spackling, sanding, caulking, a belt sander, floor varnish, re-wiring, replacing doorknobs.... god. The list goes on.

So anyway, here's the before (Not pictured: me pulling 57 6" nails out of my wall. What was this guy hanging!?!):

God, this floor was just killing me. Apparently the previous tenant just decided one day to rip up the carpet and not do anything else. It still had rug staples and nails sticking up out of it! It's a beautiful wood floor though, and the landlord recommended to just put a carpet back over it, but I couldn't.

And the work in progress. But I think it's starting to look much better. A fresh floor, new white paint, some curtains and a good clean-up. It's coming along.

Although here you can see where I finished varnishing the floor yesterday. So today's project after work, finish the floor and put ALL of my stuff back into my room.

I can't wait to show you guys when it's all done. So bear with me and my absence! I'll be back soon when the crazy leaves, I promise.

Inspiration (Home Style)

I'm still gathering up some inspiration for what I want to do with this new apartment, but here's my moodboard of sorts. Some things that I definitely know I want: orchids, a sheep rug, a big mirror leaning against the wall, black laquer furniture, lots of little picture frames on the wall with photos or without, soft lighting, sheer curtains, vintage mannequins.
The color scheme I want is similar to my own wardrobe, black, grey, white, cream, and maybe a soft pink, though I'm definitely leaning towards painting my walls either a linen color or the lightest shade of tea green.

It's moving day here, so I have all of my stuff packed up and ready to go. I'm just crossing my fingers that all of it will fit in the back of a truck, as I refuse to deal with a moving van.
It's such a strange feeling seeing everything you own in one neat little pile. I still feel like I have too much, but c'est la vie.

I feel really nervous and my stomach is tight. Probably because this will be the first time that I'm not living with some sort of parent figure around to be a safety net if shit hits the fan. Now that I'm moving off University property, this is my first "real" apartment. I'm scared, nervous and very excited.

Of course, Residential Life left me with one more kick in the ass to make sure that I'm more "good riddance" and excited than scared. Apparently I have to leave on the 19th, no exceptions, even though I explained that I can't move into my apartment until June 1st. Can't we work something out?

Of course not, because that's the way things work and if we started making exceptions the world would fall apart.

Ah... bureaucracy. How I despise thee.

So I'm camping out on my girl friend's couch for the next 12 days. But I'm so excited to have a little place of my own to decorate.

I took a quick snapshot of my bedroom after we signed the lease, and the rest of the apartment is gorgeous and so much space! My bedroom is on the long and narrow side, so behind me is more space and a walk in closet. Also outside that window is the fire escape which leads directly to the rooftop. Sweet.

I'm already thinking of what I want to do to it, after I clean up the shit that the previous tenant left. I already know I want to keep those gorgeous 20th century hardwood floors. They just need a good polish. We're ripping down those horrendous floral curtains and putting up something lighter, and the whole place needs a good coat of white paint. As for the rest... I need to wait and gather some inspiration. I've never dealt with interior design on a shoestring budget, but it can't be that much different than fashion!

Weekend Outfit

Here's my outfit I wore today for bumping around town, running a few errands, helping my friend pack and for a late night coffee date. So something stylish, comfy, that I can pretty much do backflips and jumping jacks in was necessary.

Also I was super proud of my mad make-up skillz... check out the subtle day time cat eye. It's small steps but at least I'm going somewhere and being able to draw a straight line is a big leap.

And yes, I realize I'm only 20 and have forehead wrinkles. I blame finals week and too much caffeine, hopefully they'll fade when I start to sleep regular hours again.

Finally finishing up the semester with finals week and trying to find an apartment for the next year. We have a candidate (a lovely little duplex in Brooklyn) and might possibly be signing the lease tonight, so wish me luck!

I'm considering this one from J. Jill. I like the crinkly fabric, and it's a little different because it has no buttons and closes just with a tie belt like a wrap. Plus, it's only $49.99 right now which doesn't hurt, but I have a feeling that the sizing is going to be too big for me.

What do you think? Try the more relaxed version or stick with a more traditional trench coat?

Spring Time in the City

A few more photos as I was traipsing around the city this week.

I'm so excited because a few of my photos are going up in my school's art gallery for the summer, which is such an honor at my artsy campus! I'll be sure to take pictures of it when it goes up.

And an old one, I found this again as I was cleaning out my external hard drive. It's from a month or so ago, but it's so rare that my two little sisters and I are all in the same photo together! Aren't they pretty? I miss them already, but the one in the middle is coming to live with me during the summer in New York with two of her friends, so I'm super stoked. It's my graduation present to her : )

You really don't hear artists like Adele often, not only does she have an AH-mazing voice, but she has some serious soul. Listening to her new album I feel like half of them were written by a friend confiding in me and saying "I've been there in spades darling, just listen..."
As for the other half, they still make my chest absolutely ache. She has such a heartbreakingly beautiful and emotive voice.

It seems that the only time I have an extra few minutes to snap photos is before work, just because I'm super organized like that.
Anyway, the only exception to the all-black uniform is when you wear Malia Mills designs. This is hilarious because literally everything that Malia designs is also black. Or grey if we're getting real crazy. Such as this dress which I fell in love with when I was interning with her is the Mui Nei dress. It's a very light black stripe on white, and they have it in stores in black also which I might have to pick up.
Also I'm wearing my new double finger ring! You can't really see it, but I thought I would just celebrate that :P
And the sandals? Yeah, this is their fourth year being a standby for me. I've brought them in to be fixed so many times my cobbler is starting to make fun of me.

I understand that there are some parts of fashion that are just simply not flattering, but that we (or perhaps just I) wear because they're fun and I enjoy just looking at them. I'm a very picky shopper. If I had enough of a budget to shop retail and money was no object, I'd be AN INCREDIBLY PICKY SHOPPER.
As it is, I tend to visualize exactly what I want in an item and I just have to wait until it trots on by.
Pour example, I'm on the hunt for a pair of red pumps, 3.5 - 4.5 inch heel, patent leather, stiletto heel, almond toe, .5-1 inch platform. I'm looking for a black work blazer, slim cut, falling around hip length, no padding in the shoulders, two buttons, no pockets or extra buttons, notch lapels, tropical wool or thick cotton, long sleeves that are actually the correct length (good luck on that one).

Anyway, it's easy enough for me to find these items on say, Net-a-porter, but I've been waiting a year and change for these items to stumble into my life at a price I can also afford.

So my question is, am I just a little bit of a perfectionist or a crazy shopper? Or will you guys also wait over a year and make do until you find the perfect item?

I finally had the chance to wear my body chain out (and had time to take some pictures, that was key). So here's a peek of how I decided to wear it. Originally I had wanted to throw a jacket or blazer over this whole ensemble, but it was much too hot.

If you're interested, the designer is Linquist Jewelery at Etsy. The chain is quality stuff, very light, easy and well-made. I honestly kept forgetting I was wearing it until someone would invariably comment on it.

The Dating Game

I think it's funny how my girlfriends and I all approach dating differently. We all rate people based on three pretty simple factors: intelligence, looks, personality, and I like to add "charisma".

However, I'm queen of first dates. I tend to rely heavily on "charisma" or chemistry for lack of a better word, and if I don't feel that butterflies/fuzzy feeling/dizziness/stomach drop within the first ten or fifteen minutes this is probably not going to work between us.

As for the other three, my usual m. o. is that:
1. he must have all three.
2. the combined sum of all three must be at a certain level (ex. 7+7+7= 21, and so do 7+9+5=21)
3. none of these factors can drop beneath a certain level.

I am such a math geek, but I still think it's a sound system.

This is a long and drawn out post to say that I'm dating again and I happen to have two guys that have made it to second dates and will possibly have thirds.

One is tall, drool-worthy and blonde, very smart and is quick in conversation, but is lacking in the personality department.
One is smart as hell, makes me laugh until I almost choke on my food, but he's short and while he's in good shape, his face isn't anything to write home about.

So my system has failed. They both pass it and we both have chemistry, so now what?

It seems that I'm going to be at Malia Mills again this summer, but instead of working in the studio with their buyer, I'm working as a sales girl.
I'm not going to lie, I'm super stoked for the summer. This is probably one of the cushiest summer jobs I've had in a long time. It's a product I can get excited about, a company I love, and the whole atmosphere is very chill.
So this is my third week working for them, and I thought I'd snap a quick photo of my work outfit when I got home last night. The only uniform requirement is it's all black, and trust me, in my closet that's not a problem.

*Mental note, taking photos with flash at night does very strange things to my eyes and skin. Do not repeat. And more than four hours of sleep a night wouldn't be a bad thing...

Graphic Eyes and Slicked Hair

I'm not much of a beauty aficionado. The Hispanic ladies at my work regularly ask me if I just don't have enough time to put on makeup in the morning. Truthfully, I have about seven layers on, I've just perfected the art of makeup that doesn't look like makeup, and same goes for my hair. We'll call it artfully mussed.

However these two trends I could really get behind:

Slicked Back Hair

I love this look from YSL, very clean, a little severe, it vaguely reminds me of Clara Bow for some reason. I think that it would work equally well smoothing it just straight back as well, especially with my short hair.
A straightener and some hair gel would make this a five minute hair style at most.

Graphic Eyeliner

This one I'm definitely trying out this weekend when I go out. I love the graphic liner at the Y-3 show and it seems like it would be very simple to create as well. I just need to get my hands on some primer, as if this started to smear it would definitely get ugly. Also how pretty would this look in a purple or teal?

Katy Perry I can take or leave usually, but I thought this video was stunning, and my inner sci-fi geek is very pleased.
Of course, you'll get the reference to Lady Gaga's Born This Way video. I prefer to think that it's more likely just a trend in today's artists and musicians. Have you noticed the rush of the supernatural, sci-fi and dystopian themes?
My thinking is that people are looking for an escape, considering all of the crazy that's going on in the world right now. No one wants to believe that this is it, suck it up and deal with it, so culture-wise we prefer to retreat into elaborate fantasies.

Just wanted to give a shout out to M Studio where I got the best $35 hair cut of my life. Ever.* I had Leah as my stylist and she made sure she understood exactly what I wanted and she's an absolute sweetheart. She was very skilled and very attentive, spending an hour and a half on my hair. It looked so good when I left that I literally haven't washed my hair in four days to try and keep it looking that good, because there's no way I'm going to be able to get it so glass shiny smooth at home.

It also didn't hurt that she played my therapist while she cut my hair, so thank you Leah, I will definitely be back.

* Although with my coupon it was only $17 :) At least when I spend emotionally I also am a responsible emotional wreck.

Crop Tops and Short Shorts

I received a comment a few days ago about whether it was possible to wear a crop top with hipster shorts without looking scandalous, and I thought it was a valid question that merited a few outfit examples.

Besides, my forte is basically taking questionable garments and making them appropriate :) I'm assuming by the word hipster shorts she meant short-shorts, and by the term "slutty"* she meant appropriate to wear outside and to create a fashionable outfit.

While on my previous post I mentioned that the easiest way to wear a crop top is to keep the rest of the outfit conservative, but with short shorts that takes away the option of covering up your legs. By nature, this outfit is going to be a bit more risqué, making it really only appropriate for a night out with the girls or during the summer months when everyone's flashing skin anyway.

But honey, if you have the cajones and confidence, I'd say go for it.

So here's my few recommendations, which of course you can take them or leave them as you will:

Keep your shoes flat.
Keep the top loose.
Keep your shorts high-waisted, pleated, or with a bit of volume.
Keep your arms covered.

All of these things serve to tone down the inherent sexiness and provide a little more coverage so you're not walking around in a glorified bikini.

One More Damn Thing...

Seems I hit the perfect storm this week. In the past three days the lawyer broke up with me*, the Dean let me know there's a possibility I won't be graduating on time, I got blocked out of the one class that could help me graduate on time, lost my wallet in a cab with all the important necessaries, and I'm attending a funeral. Things are pretty awesome around here right now.

Can't you just feel the sarcasm?

Not to mention I need to find a paying job for these bills, housing for the summer, try to pass these classes and if the printers in the art department would just stop breaking down on me I might be able to actually finish my final project on time, along with this, that and the other thing.

As my German friend Helen says, "Shoulders back, boobs out, lipstick on... BRING IT BITCH!"

I will be back to blogging as soon as I bitch-slap my life back to normal.

*I'm assuming, since I haven't heard from him in a week. So unless he got eaten by wolverines or kidnapped to Russia, he's just too chicken to break up with me face to face. Fun. Don't you love it when guys do that?

I've been eyeing this line for a while. What can I say? I have it in my head that I want a tiny, dainty little pendant around my neck. Something that is delicate and pretty, but with a twist or an intelligent side glance.

Warning ladies, we're about to get really intimate over here.
Most women remove hair in one way or another, shaving, nair, waxing.... and it's not new. Egyptians used a lime mixture as a sort of nair back in the B.C. and the Romans used to shave their entire bodies after attending the baths.

So I had gotten sick of shaving. Too much effort (I'm a lazy ass, I know) and waxing seemed to look pretty awesome. What? I only have to go in once every six weeks and I'm mainly hairless for the rest of the month?
Sign me up.

And being me, I went to my first waxing session before my cruise, and I figured I'd just dive right in with a brazilian. Go big or go home, am I right?
I found it to be relatively painless, considering your ripping out large swaths of pubic hair. The only thing that cracked me up was that I have become more intimate with the esthetician Marie at AR salon than any man in my life. Ever.
While I was laying there, as a distraction, I wound up asking her for advice for future waxing sessions. She was a delightful lady, and because I love you guys so much I'll share:

The hair has to be at least 1/4" to be able to be waxed, so if you're thinking about switching to waxing, winter is really the best time to start.
Schedule your waxing session in the afternoon, around 3-5pm, as your pain tolerance is highest during the late afternoon.
Avoid the week before your period, during your period (duh) and for a few days after. Again, you're sensitive and things get messy.
Pop a few ibuprofen a couple hours before your appointment and avoid nicotine, caffeine and stress.
Make sure to take a shower before a brazilian because things are about to become very intimate.

During your wax, remember to breathe. Don't hold your breath when they pull the wax strip off, it just means they have to do it again.
Talk or bring an ipod to distract yourself. The more relaxed you are the easier the process and less painful it will be.
And remember, the first one is the most painful. Afterwards the hair grows in fine and weak, so it's easier to pull out.
If the pain becomes too much, just ask for a break. Though I tend to be the kind of person who says "let's get it over with. GO FASTER!" :)

Afterwards, avoid hot showers, sex (duh), exercise, exfoliation and tight clothing for a day or so. You want the skin to breathe and give your pores a chance to close up without becoming infected.
Regularly exfoliate (2-3 times a week) afterwards to prevent ingrowns.
DO NOT SHAVE. Marie pretty much beat this into me. The hair becomes weaker and finer with each progressive wax, and you can go more time between appointments and it is less painful. However, as soon as you shave you are back to square one.

Anyway, after all of that I think I might have this become a regular habit. It's still pretty chilly here in NY so I'm thinking about waxing my legs and pits next time with my brazilian, as it's been a few weeks and no sign of regrowth. I haven't been this smooth or clean since I was ten (hehehe sorry for the awful mental image guys).
I really do think that the five minutes or so of discomfort is worth saving all that time for the next six weeks. Personally.

Since at ELLEgirl we're in full prom mode I've been looking at many, many dresses. Possibly too many.
While my own prom was a while ago, every once in a while I'll find a more casual outlier that I would like to throw into my cart.
Also, am I the only girl who was sort of meh about prom? Actually, I have a story to tell about prom, but first to the shopping:

Anyway, so my prom story.

I wasn't exactly thrilled about prom, but what I was thrilled about was dress shopping (hard to believe right?) but I hated all of the dresses at the mall. Too shiny, too sequiny, too fluffy, too trashy....

Then I was thrift shopping one day with mom at the local consignment store, and the owner pulled out this couture dress that had been sitting in the back of a society lady's closet, tags still on, that she had bought in Paris a few years ago. I had even less boobs then than I do now, so it was a perfect fit. A bit of haggling and I walked away with a beautiful black bustier silk dress, with a big swishy skirt that was long in the back, mini in the front (basically, my love) for $150.

Best part is that I still am able to wear it to any functions where my red dress won't do. Unfortunately, those pesky boobs have grown in recently so the zipper has broken from the stress. Right now it's in the pile to be taken to the tailors, but hopefully it will be back in rotation soon!

Hermes Fall 2011

I'm afraid that I'm becoming one of those girls that are loyal brand devotees (oh l'horreur), but for the past couple seasons I just have fallen in love with the Hermes collections, and the fall 2011 collection is no exception.

So easy and simple and yet another reason for a purchase of leather pants :). This would make a great "I need to be polished and put-together but can barely manage to find a pair of clean socks or my mind this morning" outfit.

So here's my look on the cheap, and as always, everything is under $100.

How to Wear a Crop Top

One of the big trends this ~~season~~ year has been the crop top, and looking at the runways for spring it looks like the trend is not letting up any time soon.

Yet, many women are shy of this trend (for the obvious reasons). But thankfully I think I've found a few ways to wear this trend without looking like a Britney flash back.

Go High-waisted

It's really a blessing that these two trends have occured at the same time, because they are perfect companions for one another. A crop top shows off a pair of high waisted trousers or a skirt perfectly, and the higher waist gives some modesty to a crop top.

So pair a loose crop top with a high waist, so instead of showing off your entire belly it's just an inch or less of rib cage. Cute.

Layer It
The other obvious option is to layer a slim tank top underneath a crop top or bra top. You still have the look and proportions of a crop top, but with more coverage.

On the other hand, you can also layer over it as well, which is another preferred option of mine. A boyfriend cardigan or blazer keeps it classy, so that you are only showing off a little sliver of belly in the front.

Let's Get Political

I figure this is my blog, I can post about things I like and things I find important. One issue that's near and dear to my heart is planned parenthood and sex education for various reasons.

I really truly believe that a lot of heart-ache could have been avoided for me and for those close to me if only we had had more information, but unfortunately the government isn't too thrilled about the idea that Americans have sex.
Yes we do.
Fact.

And I'm very upset by the thought that they are trying to cut funding for planned parenthood entirely, when it's such a little thing and can make such a big change in so many people's lives. We should be providing more funding, not less.

So take a moment, check out this political promo video, and repost it somewhere else if you feel as strongly as I do about this issue.

I had an unfortunate incident last weekend where I lost a shoe. I was up at my friend's house in Boston, and when I got home I realized I had one shoe, but not the other.

Look how lonely she is... : (

Depressing.
As soon as I realized this, of course I called her (and hopefully she'll find it), but I also felt a little sick.
How wrong is that? Feeling that upset over a piece of clothing?
Of course I realize it's ridiculous, but I felt the same way when I spilled soy sauce down the front of my white shirt. That one was a gonner too.

I'm still trying hard to be a minimalist, and learn to detach myself from clothing and remind myself that it's just a garment. It has no real value except what you paid for it.
Yet.... it still sucks to lose a favorite pair of shoes, and being a minimalist, they're ALL my favorite shoes.

What do you guys think? Do you ever get emotionally attached to clothing?

Don't get me wrong, my apartment is spotless (no thanks to my roommates : p) and damn it if I'll let a cockroach anywhere near the premises, but when it comes to my own cleanliness I've gotten a little looser.

I wash my hair maybe three times a week. Clothes like jackets, skirts, jeans get cleaned maybe once every six months. Unless I've been sweating I tend not to use soap in the shower every single day.
Now if that's gross, I'm sorry, but I've found that it works well for me. It means my hair and skin are less dry (less money spent on conditioners and body lotion) and as for my clothes, less money spent on dry cleaning and a spray of febreze or a few days in the freezer seem to work just fine.*

Best part is, apparently I'm not alone when it comes to my hair and at least Levi Strauss's executive agrees with me on the jeans.

Now I'm curious, how clean are you guys?

*Obvs if they're stained or dirty I wash them sooner, and same goes for my hair or body if I start to smell or look greasy. But, I figure if it doesn't look dirty, why wash it?

A Case for Red

Everyone knows how much of a neutral girl that I've become, and hey, I'm comfortable with it.
It simplifies things. I roll out of bed and grab enough clothing to cover my body, and it all matches. It also lets me experiment more with silhouette, length, material, and cut than I would be able to with color.

However, I will make an exception for red.
I only own one red piece, a great little cocktail dress, but I love it so. So I feel like it might be time to add a few more red pieces to my wardrobe, I'm thinking a kick ass pair of stilettos and a little red dress for the day... what do you think?

The case for red really is that it is a serious attention grabber, since whenever we go out to a fancy occasion everyone says they just look for me in my red dress in a sea of lbds. It gives the appearance that you are a confident fiery personality (in this case, I'd say it's a fair assessment :) ). Also men are turned on by red. Weird, but scientifically true, according to this article.

Well, those reasons are good enough for me.

Sooo excited you guys, two weeks until I head off for a spring break cruise! Our stop offs are going to be Bermuda, Florida and the Bahamas, then heading back to New York.

My hetero-life mate is the best bargain finder I've ever found. Ever. So the whole week long trip is only costing us $600, that would be food, board, drinks and a few trips all included.
Of course though, she wants to go snorkeling and I want to go chill with the sting rays, but I'm willing to cash out on experiences like those.

I found a ridiculous discount for a reflexology and neck massage on Lifebooker* at the Whole Health and Wellness Medspa a couple days ago, and considering the fact that my shoulders are now officially at ear level, I figured it was time to get a massage.

I thoroughly enjoyed my massage here. It was quiet (I went on a Friday afternoon. Unheard of.) and the staff was very attentive and prompt. They didn't pressure any additional services, although my masseuse did mention that my knots were so bad that he wouldn't be able to get all of them out with just a neck rub and suggested I come back for a more intense massage. Fair enough.

My masseuse's name was Kevin. Lovely man, I highly recommend asking for him. I know when I get something done I'm polite, but I don't particularly like to chat or have someone drone on at me. He merely asked if this or that was comfortable and then left me alone to relax.

How to De-stink Shoes

It's one of those awkward things you just have to talk about. If you have a favorite pair of shoes, no matter if you always wear socks with them and let them air out, eventually, they will smell.

Thankfully, I lived in hockey country, and you have not encountered a reeking smell until you have a pile of goalie equipment in the corner of the living room.
So a little trick from me to you? Wrap those heels up in a plastic bag, and stick them in the freezer for a day.

No, seriously.

It works. I promise. The cold kills off those bacteria that are causing the smell, and voila! Fresh shoes.

My roommate opened up the freezer today and saw two of my heels chilling in the icebox.
Looked at me, looked at my shoes.....
Shut the door.
"I don't even want to know."

But hey, it works.

Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Color

I'm always lured in by pretty packaging and grandiose claims. Usually, I come to my senses and check Make-up Alley to see if the claims are true, but they weren't with me when I went to Target last week.

Due to this lack of judgement, I picked up a Maybelline Superstay lipgloss/lipstick thing, excited about the prospect of un-moveable color and perfectly glossed lips without effort (yeah right).

So.... the color stays, but only around the edges of my lips and in the cracks. Not cute. The rest rubbed off in a few minutes and dried out my lips a ridiculous amount = more cracks. I looked like I had the mouth of a 90 year old chain smoker. I was applying cocoa-butter to my lips like a fiend for the next couple days trying to keep them from peeling on me. Ew.

And just for clarification I'm talking about the one with a white cap-end with balm and the color on the other end, I think it's the latest version. I haven't had a chance to try the one with a clear end with gloss in it, perhaps it's better?

But to all of you girls out there thinking about purchasing this... stay away from this product! Stay far away!

Vintage Nails

I really liked this little mini-trend that's been popping up, but unfortunately my lady at Bijoux Nails had no idea* what I was talking about when I asked for half-moon nails like Dita Von Teese.
What I'm talking about are these, as seen at the Ruffian show:

I'm more of a classic girl, so in my DIY mine came out like this:

(I apparently have very, very shaky hands first thing in the morning. That explains a lot)

In case anyone is interested, I used Essie Mademoiselle for a base coat (middle), then Opi Thrill of Brazil for the top coat (right). The color on the left is just Essie Berry Hard, and what you have before you is my entire nail polish collection.
Yeah, I'm kind of a classic girl.

If you'd like to give it a shot, I promise it's not very hard. My usual modus operandi for giving myself a manicure is dipping my entire finger in nail polish and letting the excess fall off in the shower. So if I can do it, you can too.

I was surprised that this album didn't get more press coverage when it came out. But then again, I suppose it's a very different sound than people are used to from Christina Aguilera. I like the development, although I don't think it really showcases her voice to it's full potential.

Apparently I've managed to pick up a gentleman caller in the past month, from now on he will be known as the lawyer (just to keep things simple, you see).

So why the personal note? Because I notice that every time I go out on something even close to date territory, I realize that I only have three types of items in my closet.

Fashiony, man-repelling clothes that I enjoy immensely. Usually menswear, librarian, or office inspired. These are the clothes I'm in 90% of the time and therefore make up 90% of my closet.

Slightly trashy, I'm out clubbing with my girls clothes. You know you own them too.

Clothes that don't leave the house. Yoga pants, little boys boxers, and that college tee.

So now that I'm going on my fourth (!?)* date I'm afraid I'm panicking slightly.
What do I wear that looks half-way respectable, sexy, and cute? Something soft, touchable, that shows a little more skin than my usual. You know, that I just naturally roll out of bed looking this awesome, I'm sexy without even trying look.

And did I mention that the state of my underwear drawer is revolting? Yeah, it's pretty much all gym undies in there ladies.

But let's look on the positive side: so far the lawyer's sweet, charming, and tall**. And we both have the same dry sense of humor which always helps ; ) So here's hoping that this one works out.

But here's a few things that I want to add to my closet for future dates:

Now I'm just stuck with how to wear them, since I've already gotten bored of the kitten heels and tee outfit.

Gap, I'm very impressed.

You had a moment there where you had me worried.
I mean, you're basically my childhood store, you're where I used to go school shopping every September with my mom. I still own a pair of jeans from you circa 2002 (and hell yes I still wear them).

Then you tried to be J. Crew or something. But let's get real here Gap, not everything needs to be covered in sequins, ruffles, and random bits of tulle. Bad design can't hide behind flash and knick knacks.

So to say that I'm relieved that you're embracing minimalism is an understatement. I'm closer to ecstatic. While the whole new design collection hasn't dropped yet, there are a few promising jewels in the rough this season.

This is a PSA to all my readers who follow my method of washing clothes.

Normally I'm a big fan of just throwing all of my clothes into the washing machine on a delicate cycle with some woolite and calling it a day.

I've actually had pretty good success with this method, except that I found out one tag when it says "hand wash" and "dry clean only" they really do mean it.

Cashmere and merino wool.

If these aren't mixed with any other fibers, apparently they become matted by the agitation of the washing machine, and shrink. Kind of like when you felt wool or when you rat your hair to create dreads.

What this means is that I just had a perfectly good sweater that is now about the right size to fit an American Girl doll.

Goddammit.

Strange Trends

Can we talk about two strange trends that I've seen surfacing for spring?
I'm all for fringe trends, I always find them more fascinating than the usual "Hem lines are up! Hem lines are down! Its a season about _____ insert: boobs, waist, legs"

Fringe trends never seem to be about figure flattery or sex appeal, which can be refreshing.

Flatforms

Possibly the least big-foot friendly shoe created. Ever.*
Yet there's something very appealing about the look of these, they make me think of geishas.

High-street designers take note: I'd like a pair like these from Opening Ceremony, aka the altar of cool.

These just might be for a style that's more boho than mine. My room-mate who looks like she walked out of a Wildfox Couture catalogue would rock these hard (I'm dropping hints for her to get some ; ) )
However, still very intrigued. I wonder how they would look after a week of washing and blow-drying?

Anyway, I'll keep you guys updated if I see any other interesting fringe trends.

* Except maybe creepers. Those I won't touch with a ten foot pole, my feet are big enough already.

As anyone who has lived in NYC knows, rats are a HUGE problem. That and monstrous cockroaches.*

So most bodega owners keep a cat around, because as anyone knows, a cat is better than all the exterminators and poisons that money can buy.
Besides, look at the cuteness!
It makes me miss my own two fat tabbies that I left back in Boston so much....
Although, the only things that my cats hunt are bumblebees and shoelaces.

*Don't even get me started on the time I had to hunt down three of them that were living in our apartment. Ewww. Those things will not die.

We have Raga and Bone's designs, inspired by "those crazy English guys who climbed Mount Everest in tweed", but I think it can pretty easily be transferred off the runway into real life.

Vivian Maier

I just wanted to share this amazing story (and amazing photos) with you all.
Vivian Maier was a nanny by day and in her off hours was a street photographer from 1950's - 1990's. No one had known of her work, until it was discovered recently in an Estate sale in Chicago.
They uncovered 100,000 negatives, thousands of prints, and a ridiculous amount of undeveloped film.

John Maloof bought the photographs and negatives and is now undertaking the process of developing all of the film and archiving it, and sharing what he finds on his blog.

Man Pants

You guys have no idea how excited these pants make me.

I know they're old man pants (wide leg, pleated, high waist... yup. Old man pants).
I know they make me look like a bowling pin.
I also know that I don't particularly care.

Sometimes fashion is about knowing all the proper figure-flattery rules and then blatantly breaking them. Just because you can.

The best part is that I totally snagged these (and another close replica, except in a very, very tiny black and white triangle pattern and without the pleats) for about $10 each at a thrift store.

I'm starting to compile a "things I would like to find in my closet this spring" list.

Great thing is that a lot of them are already in stores (and already on sale what?!).

Not-so-great thing is that it's still freezing and snowing up in here for the next few months.

And since I never quite got down that whole patience thing, I want to wear my purchases right now!

Floaty Maxi-skirt

I love, love maxi skirts. It's taken me a little while for my eye to adjust to the silhouette, but I've decided that it's love. Now if I could only find one long enough to purchase because I hate when they end around your ankles instead of skimming the ground : (

Tips for Buying on Ebay

As promised, here's my few tips and tricks for buying on Ebay.
And let me tell you, I've gotten some fantastic deals and I've also gotten some awful duds.

Many of my friends complain that they don't shop on Ebay because "I can't try it on or return it, I'm stuck with it! What if I don't like it?"

The way I look at it is that if I'm buying five blouses, blazers, tops, whatever, each for about $10, probably four of them will work out and one of them won't.
But mathematically, it just means I paid $50 for four usable pieces, so only $13 for each usable piece (give or take). Still much cheaper than buying at retail, so it's a risk I'm willing to take.

Anyway, on to shopping!

Finding Your Item

Make sure your search term isn't too specific. Type in a word or two (such as a brand and size) and narrow down results using the categories on the left hand side.

Think outside the box when it comes to search terms. Try using similar phrases (such as "denim" and "jeans") and also try misspelling the word to find auctions where the seller made a mistake in the listing.

If you have a favorite brand that you always buy from, start there. Or do you have a designer brand that you wish you could own, but it's too expensive? Try typing them in and see what's out there.

Also make sure to take advantage of the advanced search feature. It allows you to narrow down the search results by how soon the auction is ending, location of the seller, and a bunch of other requirements.

Advanced search also allows you to save your favorite searches and have any new results e-mailed to you on a daily basis. This feature is a god-send, because really, the way to get the best deals is to check in daily. But who has time for that?

Buyer Beware

Just a few things to keep your buying experience pleasant and prevent duds from showing up on your doorstep:

Check measurements. Sizes vary even within a brand, so always check the measurements of the garment to make sure that it fits.

Check seller's ratings. I'm a little hesitant to go below a 99% positive rating, although I'm bidding right now with a seller who has a 96% rating (A Philip Lim skirt! For $11!) because I took a look into her feedback and since she's only sold to 12 people, one negative feedback for slow shipping brought her down to a 96%. So use your judgement.

Check shipping charges. A great deal may not be so great after all of the shipping charges. So make sure to include that in the price so you aren't surprised at the end of the auction.

If there's ever an issue with the item you receive, the seller you are buying from, ect. ect. head right on over to the Ebay conflict resolution center. Ebay is a very buyer-oriented experience, so they will probably resolve the issue in your favor.

And if you ever have any questions at all, message the seller. Most of them are more than happy to provide additional information or pictures.

Bidding

There are really two ways to deal with bidding. Go the cheap route or the necessities route.

If you're cheap (like moi) definitely snipe auctions.
I know it's a bit low and I know it's a cheap shot. But man, does it work.
Just hold off bidding until the last few minutes of an auction, then bid your highest amount. It doesn't give the other bidders a time to raise their bid and it keeps the auction low.
Also, there are people out there that you can pay to snipe an auction for you. Not sure if it's worth the price, but they're out there.

However, if you don't have the time or it's something that's necessary in your life, just start off bidding the highest amount you are willing to pay, plus a dollar or two to protect against snipers. Then, sit back and let the Internet gods decide.

Be a Good Buyer

Just a few ways you can help keep the Ebay community running smoothly.

Realize that the sellers are people too. Sometimes they make mistakes.
Also realize that you are buying used clothing (unless otherwise stated). Don't expect for it to have that "brand-new from the store" clothes smell or look.
Always pay what you bid on. There's nothing more frustrating than having to put in a "have not received payment" case. If you are having trouble paying, just message the seller. Communication is key.
If you had an unpleasant experience and are about to leave negative feedback, talk to the seller. See if you can resolve the issue.
Also, read the description, the whole description. Nobody likes surprises.

Anyway, that's my basic beginner's guide to buying from Ebay. Are there any tips that I'm missing?

Dances of Vice

If you're in the New York area, get your calendars ready, because you're going to want to mark this one down.

Last week I stumbled upon/wound up chatting with Shien Lee at a dancing class, and found out she organizes the Dances of Vice events.

Described as "the art of nightlife once again revived... showcasing an exotic melange of art, performance, and music influenced by that special time in history, the 1920s and '30s"
It's more generally known as one of the best parties in town, bringing all of the new romantics and eccentrics out of the wood work for a night of over the top opulence and decadence.
Generally, a smashing good time.

After class she invited me to their next event, a film noir themed party held at the Ace Hotel on January 29th.

Body Chain Debate ft. Emma Roberts

What's all the fuss?
For some god-knows reason everyone's in a tizzy about Emma Roberts wearing a body chain. My favorite is Lovelyish doesn't even know what to call the damn thing (kinda like they didn't know to put my name on my articles that they syndicated. Hint, you call that ERIN. But I'm not irritated about it or anything).
So here's the picture that has everyone saying "OMG what is she wearing?!"

Yeah, I didn't see the big deal either.
Actually, I think it looks great. That's how I'd wear it.

Also the Queen's at The Kingdom of Style and Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere have been rocking the body chain for a year or so now.

And I believed that I mentioned how much I loved the look (but really can't justify buying one) back in 2009 in this post here.

Anyway, a big YAY to Ms. Roberts for trying something a little different, and a big YAY for personal style. The world would be so boring without it.

Much Love to Lands End

I have a serious soft spot for heritage brands, and with a pseudo-preppy style you can imagine my devotion to places like Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, Lilly Pulitzer, Land's End, Sperry and L.L. Bean.

However, I just ordered a Breton striped shirt and cardigan from Land's End (they're having a super sale at their spin-off brand that j'adore: Lands End Canvas) and the little note I received just made me love them a little bit more:

While their sizes are a bit too generous (I had to return two shirts that I had ordered, much too big in the waist) if I ever have something that I don't mind being a bit slouchy, I will definitely order from them.

For the price, the quality is fantastic (with only a dud here or there, but what do you expect?).
The customer service and return policy is helpful and easy.
Their Canvas brand is a younger, trimmer, updated version of their old brand, which is great.

But that they send hand-written notes to thank customers?
Sold.
It's the little things that count the most to me, and I'll be sure to remember this personal touch if I ever open up my own store.

Oh No She Didn't

I have the unfortunate dilemma that I came back to NYC two weeks before school started, so I'm home but nobody else is.
It gives me a lot of time to wander about the city though, so I'm fine with it.
After strolling downtown, almost falling face first into a pile of slush (those walking skills need a little bit of practice) and finding a bookstore to browse, I perused the fashion section for anything good as usual.

I came across Clinton Kelly's book Oh No She Didn't!: The top 100 style mistakes women make and how to avoid them.
I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. While the advice is a little DUH?! (it is for the stylishly challenged after all) the tone and the writing style make it worth a read. I actually was laughing out loud in the book store for most of it, and yes I did read it cover to cover.

The tone reminded me a lot of my gay and transexual friends advice to me.

On a random side-note, transexuals give the best fashion/makeup advice ever.
Except for that time one of them advised me to get a nose piercing or a tattoo because "that fresh off the farm look isn't doing anything for you".
But in general, what better person to give advice on how to appear attractive than a man, who dresses like a woman, but still is attracted to women? Makes more sense than a girlfriend giving advice on what a guy will like.
Of course, I tend to dress for myself, but they definitely know what's flattering and sexy and what isn't :)

But all in all, I think I put on a good show.

New Things

I don't know about anyone else, but I always feel like the new year is a clean start. So I like to celebrate a little by getting a new haircut, usually something drastic.

So about 6 or 8 inches later, we have this.
I'm still trying to remember how to actually blow-dry my hair (man, haven't had to do that in a while) so I've come to terms with the fact that it's going to look a little crazy for the next few weeks.

Anyway, here's my outfit for today. Just heading down into the village, I'm going to learn the Argentina tango today, I mean, why not?

The thing I always forget about having short hair is

1. You actually have to do something with it every day.
2. People can see your face. Which means you also have to do something with that every day.
3. They always make my chin look a little mannish. I'm over it.

I'm just never satisfied. As soon as I have short hair, I wish it were long again. When it's long, I wish it were short.
C'est la vie.

On other notes, I rescued this bag from a family friend's attic. It had been lying under a window so the leather was ridiculously bleached and cracked, but it's such a beautiful Coach bag I figured I'd try and save it.
So after two hours of polishing and a can of shoe polish, it looks pretty gorgeous. Still a little aged, but more family heirloom than junk shop.

*Tip: when trying to rescue bleached or cracked leather, don't have it re-dyed because they strip everything (dye won't penetrate past the varnish/treatment on the leather). Instead, try some leather oil and shoe polish, because both soak past the varnish into the actual leather. Also it's a hell of a lot cheaper than having it dyed.

We also went through my dad's closets (yes, plural) this vacation. That man owns more clothes than any woman I've ever known. He's just such a pack rat.

Anyway, I rescued this cardigan from him. It's a cardigan from when he went to school at Berkley, CA back in the 70's.

It needs a bit of de-pilling, but still. I'm a little in love. All I need is a poodle skirt and some saddle shoes : P

* For a New Year's resolution I signed up for Mint.com to see if I could try and budget a little better. Unfortunately, my complaint is that the system is a bit rigid and/or geared towards someone with a much larger income.

But so far all of the daily warnings of how much I'm over budget have been helping : ) All of the visual pie graphs are great too and worth signing up for just to see where all my money goes (hint: it's in the shopping and entertainment category)

Vanity Sizing Cartoon from the New Yorker

I can't be the only person who thinks that it's wrong when I'm a size 8 or 10 in vintage, size 4 or 6 in boutique designer/UK sizing, and a 000 in US mall brands (if they ran that small, but that's what a tailor is for right?).

Who, exactly, are you trying to fool?

I promise you that I'm not shrinking away, and yet, my sizes seem to indicate otherwise.

That's why it cracks me up when people pull out the trivia that Marylin Monroe was a size 12, so big is beautiful!

Honey, Marylin Monroe also had a 23 inch waist.

If we were best buds and went shopping at the mall today, she'd be about a size 2.

Tea Skirts

I've been eyeing this new hem length on the runways, from Fendi, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, and deciding whether it looks fresh or matronly.

I've finally decided that it's a refreshing change from the barely-there mini skirts that we've been seeing in the past. I love my legs, they're my favorite part, but it wouldn't kill me to put them away for a season or two (or at least once in a while).

Here's one of my favorite outfits from Fendi. It's still young and edgy looking even with the hem length and conservative style, which can veer into dowdy or 1950's period costume.

Here's my interpretation of the look, with everything under $200 (of course).

Although, you probably own most of the items in your closet already. I know that I'm just missing the Longchamp bag and a tea-length skirt. As for the very loose interpretation of the purse, I detest logo splattered pieces of clothing.

Of course, it's personal taste, but I feel that it's too flashy and "new money".

Because remember, "new money screams, but old money whispers".

Luxury isn't about labels, but about fit, fabric and style. A little logo here or there isn't bad, like the little one stamped into the leather by Longchamp, but I don't want your logo emblazoned across my chest. If you're going to do that, you might as well pay me to be your walking billboard.
